Job Description: The position of Field Service Engineer is responsible for engaging with Command Alkon's clients in configuring, calibrating, and maintaining industrial automation systems to improve concrete production, material handling, and plant operations. The Field Service Engineer designs, programs, configures, and maintains the software and hardware components for batch automation and plant control including integrating electrical components such as Motor Control Centers (MCCs), contactors, soft starters, and Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) for power distribution and motor operation; calibrating digital and analog sensors for level, positioning, movement, moisture, current, flow, and weight, as well as hydraulic/pneumatic actuators and solenoid valves for system control; and configuring private LAN setups, RS485 networks, and remote connectivity tools for seamless plant automation and data exchange. Further, the Field Service Engineer oversees the following industrial and electrical processes:
- Material Handling and Delivery Systems - Automating and integrating conveyor systems, silo storage, and bin filling to ensure efficient material movement.
- Weighing and Dosing Control - Configuring and calibrating systems for precise dosing of cement, aggregates, water, admixtures, fibers, and colors; ensuring accurate material proportioning through the integration of load cells, flow meters, pumps, and automated dispensing systems.
- Industrial Automation and Safety - Implementing automation logic, interlocks, emergency stop circuits, and compliance with industrial safety regulations to ensure plant and personnel safety; configuring Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems for real-time monitoring and automation control.
- Industrial Networking and Database Management - Configuring plant control networks, integrating industrial communication protocols, and managing SQL databases (Firebird) for system performance, troubleshooting, and data reporting.
- Electrical Safety Systems - Implementing and maintaining interlocks, lock-out/tag-out procedures, overload protection, and emergency stop functions.
Collaborate with customers to provide technical hardware instruction and engineering support regarding the installation, operation, and maintenance of systems. Diagnose engineering errors or technical issues and determine the proper solutions to make recommendations. Respond to customer inquiries and troubleshoot and resolve obstacles. Manage all onsite installation, repair, maintenance, and testing of the systems. Document the functional and technical design of the systems. Maintain a working log with detailed information on all required system updates as well as the completion dates. Coordinate classes to train end users on best practices to maintain consistency across all end users. Improve the existing training programs by evaluating course objectives, reviewing proposed changes, and making recommendations. Perform automation configurations remotely. Manage all assigned projects to completion for on-time delivery and compliance with budgetary constraints. Travel required 70% of time throughout North America. Position is fully remote and reports to the corporate headquarters in Dublin, OH.
The position of Field Service Engineer requires a total of 70% domestic and international travel throughout the United States and Canada in order to oversee on-site client system installation, perform wiring and integration, calibrate sensors and weighing systems, conduct equipment testing, provide operator training, and supervise initial production startup. Of this percentage, 90% of travel time is spent domestically in the United States and 10% of the travel time is spent traveling internationally in Canada.
Job Requirements: Requires a Bachelor's degree in Mechatronics, Electrical or Electronic Engineering, or a related field and 1 year of experience. Must have experience in each of the following skills: Industrial machine automation, processes, and mechanics: Programmable Logical Controlled driven process, material handling systems, conveyor systems, electrical pumps and Motor Control Center, and manufacturing/assembly line equipment or process; Network systems: Private LAN configuration, design and troubleshooting, RS485, network wiring / design; Hydraulic and pneumatic systems; diagram reading/design, solenoid valve 4w2p, 5w3p, rotary, rod and other types of actuators, and manifold blocks; Electrical safety procedures: device interlocks, emergency buttons / circuit designs, latching circuits, lock-out tag-out, start-delta motor starts, and overload protection circuit; Electrical power components, including contactors, soft starters, and variable frequency drives, capacitor banks, and circuit breakers; Supervisory system (industrial automation control): interaction, design, communication and troubleshooting; Programmable logic controller: multiple cards installation, sizing, design, installation, commissioning and troubleshooting; Ladder logic: diagram reading / design ability, troubleshoot and diagnostic; Electrical control systems: read, interpret, design, and troubleshoot different kinds of diagrams, latching circuits, timers, safety relays, and pushbuttons; Project Management: Planning, scheduling, budgeting and defining priorities for activities; Microcontrollers/electronic logic: Boolean logic and logical gates, Analogic digital converter and multiplexing signals; and SQL Database: Read and interpret existing queries, custom build scripts for troubleshooting and analysis, export results and alter tables/records.
